Quirky and Cool: Testing the Limits of What Can Be Engraved

Engraving isn’t just a technique—it’s an art form. It’s what takes the ordinary and turns it into something extraordinary (or, in some cases, something hilariously questionable). At Perso by J, we don’t just engrave—we experiment. And sometimes, that means pushing the boundaries of what should be engraved… just to see what happens.

Testing Weird Engraving Ideas

Ever looked at an object and thought, Can I engrave that? Yeah, same. So, naturally, I had to find out. From edible creations to things that really shouldn’t be put under a laser, let’s talk about some of the weirdest engraving experiments I’ve attempted.

Engraving the Unexpected

Wood? Metal? Leather? Been there, done that. But what about… ice? Fruit? A literal rubber duck?

I recently fell down an internet rabbit hole about engraving on fruits and vegetables. Imagine gifting someone a personalized pumpkin or a watermelon with their name carved into the rind. Romantic? Terrifying? Either way, I’m intrigued.

Then there was ice engraving. The result? A stunning, short-lived masterpiece that quite literally melted away before my eyes. Talk about ephemeral art. It got me thinking—some engravings aren’t meant to last forever, and that’s kind of poetic.

And let’s not forget the seashells, cork, and leather I’ve experimented on. Because apparently, I like to test if anything can become a personalized keepsake. Spoiler: Most things can. Some just fight back.

The Funniest Engraving Fails

Of course, with great experimentation comes great… disaster.

Like the time I tried to engrave a bar of soap, thinking it would make a fancy, customized gift. Turns out, lasers and soap don’t mix well unless you’re into melted, misshapen blobs that look like they came from a bad science experiment.

Then there was the cheese engraving incident. Yes, it worked. No, I would not recommend it—unless you enjoy your workspace smelling like burnt cheddar for a week. (I do not.)

And finally, my proudest failure: engraving a rubber duck. Let’s just say the poor thing ended up with a slightly tipsy-looking grin, like it had a wild night at the duck pond. Now, it sits in my workshop as a reminder that sometimes, the best lessons come from the silliest ideas. Also, don't try this one at home.

Final Thoughts: Should You Try This at Home?

If you’ve got a laser engraver and an adventurous spirit, I say go for it. Just maybe… keep the cheese experiments to a minimum.
